Currently at an MBB, recruiter reached out about an opportunity with Goldman Sachs executive office on their conflicts resolution group (similar to compliance) - worth interviewing for?

I interviewed there last year for their Risk team. Ultimately I wasn’t a fan of taking a pay cut on my bonus for the lower COL of Dallas and supposedly better WLB.... but the folks were good, the org was smart and driven. I have good things to say overall.

like

Interview for fun, in case you want to refresh your interview skills. I wouldn’t seriously consider the role though.
Oh also, C1 definitely sounds fresh out of school (I mean the passion for his/her job is great lol)

Why not ? Goldman is a pretty good place to work at. I had a project there and I felt the folks there were pretty smart and driven. Unlike many other Banks I've worked at.

Also, how come no one is reaching out to me for jobs :(

like

It being “back office” is a huge problem because financial services tend to view their back office people as just losers who weren’t good enough to do the front office job. Consequently they treat them like shit and their career opportunities are severely limited.

They’re great jobs for gold watch seekers but I wouldn’t recommended it to the ambitious

like

OP I’m with the others here. Sure, Goldman is great, but they’re known for their front-office and deal work, not their back office stuff. I’d argue that an MBB alum can do better.

like

Agree with most of this thread, back office compliance is a significant step down from MBB and most MBBers would not be looking at those roles given they do not drive revenue.

Aim to get into a power center where your contribution is critical to firms performance vs. mandatory admin.

How many of GS’s most senior leaders came up through back office functions? Will tell you how important that function is seen within the firm.

like

NO. Avoid the Federation at all costs. You will not be appropriately compensated for your work. If it’s not revenue generating/front office, avoid it at all costs.

like

I second this, had a project at GS for a year and it sucked.

If you’re at MBB you don’t want your exit to be in compliance. Avoid. It will hurt your further exits

like

Hey all, thanks for the advice. Got a little more specific since it's the Conflicts Resolution Group at Goldman, which is similar to compliance but not exactly so, I guess.

like

give me your interview if you don’t want it. Great opportunity

likefunny

This is deep back office, moving from MBB would be a step down in everything - pay, trajectory, exit ops, prestige, etc. you have zero likelihood of moving to an FO role
At Goldman from thhs

like

Nope... i am ex GS. It’s FO or go home

like

Ex-GS here: highly do not recommend going from MBB.

like

Stay away

like

Yes, I haven’t done the research but show me any top-5 compensated executive at a bank that rose through the ranks in compliance - it doesn’t exist.

like

C2 I made no assertion and provided no recommendation on whether (s)he should or shouldn’t interview. I’m merely pointing out this fact, from which you can assume that through compliance you won’t rise to the top of a bank.

That’s fine if (s)he doesn’t want that or cares about other things. Up to them. But a “rule” of careers is that you want to be in the business of the business

likesmart

Nope dont do it

like

LOL

Goldman is not what it used to be

GS used to be the preeminent Wall Street bank and extremely prestigious. While it obviously still holds some of that cache, it has lost some as its expanded into “less sexy” businesses in pursuit of growth (eg retail banking).

I read a book 10 years ago called The Partnership that was pretty interesting history on the firm.

Not sure if B4 was alluding to this or something else

likesmart

I know this is old but I just received an offer from GS for their compliance team as an associate. I’m currently at a big 4 and interviewing at MBB - does anyone have any advice?

sure

Here is my idea for a startup! I collect all the data from career transitions and use Data Analytics to predict the most likely career transitions. I could start with consulting. What do you guys think about this? I would be able to predict based on your firm(mbb, big4), your experience, which role you are likely to move (Faang pm, strategy manager, move to mbb). I have all the data to do this, but wanted your thoughts. Would the output of this be relevant to you?

Writing annual goals. What are examples of how to write “quantifiable” goals as a consultant? Are you measuring number of relationships built, projects, or something else?

Most of consulting is advising on solutions to problems, but I don’t control the outcome, whether the advice is implemented, or the budget. Sales is easy (e.g. “sell $2M of products/services this year”) because there is a clearly defined measurement. What can consultants measure?

Is your firm monitoring attendance? Today we got scolded like children at school for not coming in 3x a week as required by the new firm policy.

so every single major dip the last 4 months have been magnified by the use of leverage. If btc drops “naturally” by 5%, but liquidations are in the billions (which they have been), then that 5% drop turns into 15%. Over leveraged apes are literally screwing it up for all of us more than just themselves. Frustrating but also somewhat positive news that onchain analytics, fundamentals, and general TA are still in play. We’ll see what happens because I don’t think these levered traders will stop
