I’ve been in the industry now for over 20 years. I don’t have many regrets in my life, but one that always stuck with me was when I had to sacrifice too much of my personal vacation time for work. Don’t make the same mistake I did. Disconnect. Client work will always be there when you get back. They will respect your boundaries. And you will be proven to be invaluable because no one else can do the work without you.

I leave my work phone & laptop at home when I'm on vacation.
My away / OOO message indicates who my backup is, and they decide whether to act on any client requests that come in or not. That person does have my personal contact number so they can message me, but only for the most urgent requests.
In my 14 years at SAP, I've only had a backup contact reach out to me 2x on my personal cell while I am OOO to ask about something client related that was actually urgent.
