I see a lot of conversation starters that start with implicit / unsupported presuppositions. I think it’s hard to debate a point if a bunch of the assumptions are unknowns.
E.g. here you have to presuppose that Exxon is currently straight-up unethical.
I’m not necessarily disagreeing with the viewpoint that Exxon is an unethical-leaning company, but it’s a pretty big assumption to just lean on with no support to it, especially because your view of why Exxon is unethical might be pretty different from someone else’s who believes they’re unethical but for a different reason.
For example, I think their actions re: deliberately hiding evidence of climate change for decades is / was unethical.
However, I would disagree with a viewpoint that oil extraction is inherently unethical, which is one I’ve come across before.
I think it's hard...and involves a "restart" with new leaders. I'll give you an example...I never thought of Microsoft as a particularly ethical company. I love Bill Gates now, but I think he's evolved quite a bit from when he was running the company, Today, under Satya Nadella, Microsoft is doing some really forward thinking things, investing in privacy and reducing carbon emissions, adopting forward thinking employee practices.
