Ha! We avoided bringing the car seats for a couple trips. When you rent them. Not only are they absurdly expensive but they were not as clean as we would like. Not that ours are clean but at least it’s a known mess.
So we figured out it’s actually not that tough to bring them. We usually Uber to the airport then we just have to lug them from the curb to the check in area. And they are free to check. Then at the destination we would have one parent go to get the car while the other gets some food, waits for the luggage then we do the pick up curbside. It’s a very good system.
Yep we always brought ours and since they’re free to check, just crammed our other stuff in it and only brought baby stuff as carry-on. It’s not great, but if can curbside check it’s not bad either.
They know you don’t want to bring them, that’s why the rental is so expensive.
Buy a lightweight version for travel that you can take along as others have suggested
I use a car seat backpack and bought cheaper/ lighter yet safe car seats for travel specifically, both go into the back pack and we check it for free. Have a 3 year old and 4 month for reference.
If you need a true car seat - v.s. a booster - I’d get one that can fit on the plane seat. Most of these come with wheels and you can strap the kids into them as you take them through the airport.
As the kids get older look into a booster backpack that the kids can carry and sit on top of. We used one for years and it was great as it gave our kid a sense of independence with getting to pack their own bag - and gave us one less thing to lug around.
If you book your Hertz rental through AAA or some corporate codes car seats are free.
