WOULD A DRINK HELP?
By going back in our own drinking histories, we could show that years before we realized it we were out of control, that our drinking even then was no mere habit, that it was indeed the beginning of a fatal progression.

Hi everyone, just to be clear, these Daily Reflections come from a published book that includes a clip from AA literature followed by a paragraph or two that is a reflection on the topic by an AA member. I make sure to put the reflection in quotes to signify that it is not me or my story.

That said, I did lose my job two months ago, I battle IBS daily, I lost my dad in a car accident the month before I got sober, and I had a relationship end last year. Basically, it’s possible to stay sober through anything, and while AA can’t prevent tragedy and hard times, it can significantly reduce the suffering when we rely on the fellowship.
Sorry I missed that! Btw Op, your story is also inspiring to hear…sorry for all that you’ve been faced with and congratulations for pulling through as you have!

“When I came to A.A., I realized that A.A. worked wonderfully to help keep me sober. But could it work on real life problems, not concerned with drinking? I had my doubts. After being sober for more than two years I got my answer. I lost my job, developed physical problems, my diabetic father lost a leg, and someone I loved left me for another — and all of this happened during a two-week period. Reality crashed in, yet A.A. was there to support, comfort, and strengthen me. The principles I had learned during my early days of sobriety became a mainstay of my life, for not only did I come through, but I never stopped being able to help newcomers. A.A. taught me not to be overwhelmed, but rather to accept and understand my life as it unfolded.”
Op, thank you, that’s very inspiring to hear! Agreed! AA isn’t just a program for arresting alcoholism, it’s a blueprint for life!
This is really inspiring to read and I really appreciate you sharing it with us. I know sometimes it can be hard to be open and vulnerable but I also know that being vulnerable helps others in the same situation.
