It can be a struggle, especially when messages come from various applications (indeed, LinkedIn, email, symplicity, handshake, etc.) but I try to get to everyone that reached out, or sends a message showing interest, even if I’m a couple days late.
I agree with this sentiment, having been on both sides of the coin. Unfortunately, when you are fielding hundreds of applicants all by yourself, for each job opening you're trying to fill, a personal response simply isn't always possible. At the very least, though, you should be sending automated replies to at least acknowledge the applicant and let them know they're in the queue.
