Was at a megacorp with okrs, endless presentations and vision sprints, processes on top of processes on top of processes , slow as molasses, hated it. Moved to a disorganized, quickly growing small company. You’d be shocked how much you can get done if you simply have a vision, make a simple presentation to everyone and then talk to all the designers or leads, PMs and devs during reviews. PMs will hate me for this, but it’s so much better to have a clear design lead with a vision who can communicate well every day to slowly and iteratively inch closer to it rather than to lay out a three year plan that will be obsolete six month later. Communicate often with leadership about what the North Star you are aiming for is, and show progress. Another key is to balance ‘the vision’ with the talent you have working on it. If you make your reports feel like they have agency in shaping that vision, rather than simply following it, you’ll eventually be able to let them run it.
This is great! Thanks for the response. I've been recently working with Product Management towards a vision. My principal designer has struggled a little leading the effort there, as the domain knowledge is lacking (with the team in general), a competency I've realized very quickly, that matters! You can understand your users but if you're not confident in your domain expertise, it's going to be a struggle.
Personally I've always leaned more towards "story driven" tactics for UX than roadmaps, but just never excelled with creating a vision that really had the impact you describe.
I delivered a UX Strategy Masterclass for UX Johannesburg. Here's a link. Hoping this will help. For the record, it's an EXTREMELY large and broad lift. https://youtu.be/ZHGI9sKsU8M
