Starting a new job at Applied Materials on Monday as a Manufacturing Engineer III. I’ve been out of college for 5 years and all of my work experience till now has been in R&D for start ups and small businesses . So not only is this a new experience for me going into such a large company but also a industry (semiconductors). Does anybody has tips or advices on what I should expect as a new hire and how I can set myself up for success? Thanks!

I work at a large company with hundreds of designers spread over dozens of teams. I have biweekly meetings with my design manager where we go over the things I’m working on and he okays or critiques the designs. If I need to talk about anything in between those meetings I’ll tag him in a comment on Figma or send a Slack message. As for PMs, that person varies from project to project so it’s often a matter of figuring out how each one works, which can be a bit of a challenge from time to time.
I work very close to my PM and have a relationship with the EM (engineering) as well.
We have weekly’s every Monday to sync on current project status, have design reviews and also make sure we’re aligned on priorities and scope work.
My PM and I also have weekly’s with the main/senior front-end engineer to get feedback on my work and discuss technical things. Pretty much most meetings we are in together so we’re always in sync.
Don’t currently have design manager 😬
I currently a run product vertical, as the sole PD. So that’s having strategic conversations with Director of PM (ranging from discovery work, forming hypothesis around where the product should be in 3+, 6+ & 9+ months, working toward proving those hypothesis, research, mapping, etc). With the Senior PM, we work on Research Planning, Running User Interviews together and handling certain feature road map efforts together. With the Engineering Partners (Front & Back End), we meet a handful of times a week through stand ups and one off meetings. The working relationship is doing discovery work + working through the problem space, aligning on engineering constraints and best UX for our users, fielding engineering maintenance tickets.
EPD (engineering, Product and design) will all meet during weekly stand ups and one off 1:1’s.
Since I’m a principal, it’s expected that I run autonomously but be transparent in communication, with the HoPD.
Are you talking graphic design or software design?
