Despite working in Finance I didnt make the best financial decisions this year and I'm feeling discouraged going into the new year. How do you shake off the dust of bad decisions and move forward?

Look forward, not back. I'm still paying off some debt from my own poor decision making, but I remind myself that it's very within my control to do so. I'm keeping a strict budget until it's paid off.

If it makes you feel any better, I am right there with you. However, I am not going to beat myself up about it. What is done is done. All we can do is focus on the year ahead of us and how to be more financially responsible.

Thank you both for your input. Glad I'm not the only one fighting this uphill battle!

Personal finance is such an emotional game. The best thing you could do is be gentle with yourself for struggling in 2025 and try to do better in 2026. Last year is just a sunk cost at this point.

I have a 1-year plan, 5-years plan, and long-term plan. I track progress at least monthly. Works for me!

I really feel this. Even with all the knowledge, it’s easy to look back and think “I should’ve known better,” but life still happens. I try to remind myself that one rough year or a few bad calls don’t define the bigger picture, and that adjusting course is part of the process.

Currently working at an IRA with great WLB. Honestly I love my job, the firm, and people I work with.

Also doing MBA part time at a T15 school. Thinking about switching to IB but I’ve done my research and I think I would burn out of IB in two years but I might be ok with that for the opportunities after.

Need career advice. Trying to break into a finance role, preferably an Analsyt role but I have no transferable experience. I worked as a mortgage loan officer (which is sales) for 2 years after college, but since mortgage is such a niche industry, no hard skills transfer and have no relevant undergrad internships unfortunately. I know I can essentially get any sales job I want in finance IE: financial advisor etc. but don’t want to be stuck in sales forever. Any advice?

There is this big bank where I'd love to work at, and after several interviews for various positions they end up promoting someone from within, even thou I understand it and think it’s good they promote their people, it left me feeling like I'm just being used to comply with the process.

I have an offer in PE VP role in Citco and JPM and I am at cross road on which is one to company to choose. Their pay is very similar but JPM is offering an attractive signing on bonus. I need a honest advise on which is better between these two firms.
