I think they should address the problem. I've never paid much attention to the WNBA, to be honest, but I'm becoming aware of it mainly because of controversies related to Caitlin Clark. When you have a player who's a big draw, and the publicity getting out there tends to be negative, it's probably a good idea to finesse things. Having said that, I'm not sure what they can do, but as you indicate about storytelling, there must be some better storyline.
Pro
I agree. I think that need to figure out how to address the problem.
I think they could try to highlight other players, not just Caitlin Clark. I also think they would benefit from steering clear of the "Caitlin Clark vs. Angel Reese" "Caitlin Clark vs. x player" angles. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like this positioning just invites negativity and steers people toward rooting against players, which leads to all kinds of unnecessary problems and animosity.
Pro
You’re right. Leaning into that discourse creates the nastiest of bots and naysayers to get riled up online.
This is sports and many with voices are casual fans who never really watched the WNBA. This issue isn’t going to end and the league benefits by it not ending.
Highlighting other players while you have gold is not good for business. WNBA players have complained for years about money and attention. You can't dictate what fans like but once they like something such as Caitlin, you have to maximize it. Highlighting other player who fans have told you they don't care about is setting yourself up for failure. Those other players are getting indirect marketing because people are coming to see Caitlin.
It’s definitely time for the WNBA and NBA to take control of the narrative and start finding other heroic stories and players to champion. Honestly, statistics play a role. This is where they could lean into the hard numbers of which 2 or 3 players are excelling and delve into that.
Why is she a problem though? I guess I am not really understanding how she is a problem but I will admit I haven't watched too many games. I agree with others above though that I think they are trying to run with what is working right now and whether liked or not that seems to be Caitlin Clark.
Pro
She herself isn’t the problem. While she could do and say more to attempt to quell the worse online, I don’t think it would have a lasting impact. Those voices just want to be negative. She’s doing what she needs to do by going out and balling.
