I give a glucosamine supplement every morning as a preventative measure for my 7 year old hound. I have not noticed any signs of arthritis but she is older and we are avid hikers so I figure it can't hurt to try to keep those joints as healthy as they can be.
I give a joint supplement (Glycoflex3, glucosamine and chondritin) and fish oil. My dogs are young so the joint supplement is a preventative measure recommended by my orthopedic vet since my dogs are active in SAR and dog sports. The fish oil helps my dog’s allergies noticeably.
The only supplement I give are omega 3s, for both our 8-year-old Golden and 2-year-old GSP. Neither of them are showing any stiffness or issues that I can discern, but it makes me feel better and it’s no skin off our backs.
My lab just turned 3 but I started giving him glucosamine (NaturVet) because he started having a slight hobble after a lot of activity half a year ago. They come in different size doses and he just gets the smallest one, since he’s so young. I know three is nothing compared to ten, but knowing that labs are prone to hip problems, I have no problems giving him the supplement.
I don't. Giving pets some supplements or vitamins can cost them risk of toxicity. If they want their pets to be healthy they just have to give them food with balanced diet and exercise.
I don't like giving them because I am not sure always if pet owners are truthful and what they are really truly giving heir pets. Also, some aren't studied and may be harmful to pets.
Supplements are useful for what they’re intended for. If a pet has a health condition that can be helped by evidence based neutraceticals, then it should be used. There’s lots of evidence that behavioral, hepatic, orthopedic, skin health are benefited by supplements
