I would love to know what my manager makes, but I would never ask. My company definitely doesn't want us being open about that.
Who made that conversation so taboo? Unless a NDA was signed you can talk about anything really. I always ask if they are comfortable with the topic and then ask if they could share. And if they don’t want to give an exact number then ask for a ballpark figure.
I’m open with my team about how much I make. I hope that if I leave and one of them gets promoted but their pay doesn’t reflect then they should ask ownership why they aren’t paid the same as I was.

Congrats on the promotion! 🎉 I get why you’d be curious about numbers, it’s normal to want a target. Asking directly can be tricky, though. Maybe start by asking about the salary range for the manager role instead, it keeps it professional and still gives you an idea of what you’re aiming for.
I’d be nervous to ask my manager what she makes too. I might start by asking about the typical pay range for managers instead of asking her personal number, just to understand what I’m working toward.
