Boundaries are important because they build trust and respect for others. Provided that the boundaries are within the organizational guidelines.
well said.
When I was younger, I had a real problem with setting boundaries. I’d say yes to practically every thing they asked. Then I started to notice how badly they started treating me and other employees. I had to toughen up and start making more time for myself. I’ve always done it in a professional way, rather than confrontational, yes there are some employees who can actually get away with that. If you use Outlook at work start setting lunch breaks, late starts or early finishes in your calendar. Always put in that you are out of the office, don’t use busy or off line. Also in your email signature, write your workdays and times, if you work less than 5 days a week. If you want to go nuclear on them, quote from your contract. Can you work through your lunch break? Let me see what my contract says about that... That’ll be a no. Let them argue with HR, they drew up your contract.
I feel like it's easier for some people to say no than others. When I've said no in the past, the higher ups make it sound like I'm just supposed to do everything they say without question.
I'm working the government site as a contractor, and I really love what I do.The problem is I'm always on 23 months contract, so I always know that I'll have to leave and job hunt AGAIN. I've tried talking to the line manager lots of times, but its always the same, sorry nothing I can do,and if that's not bad enough, thay are recruiting at the moment and have cut the contact down to 11 month's. Now Ive done 2 22 months contracts, but I wouldn't come back for an 11 months. Your only in and your getting your marching orders. There's no loyal or thanks,no room to grow, all because so thay don't have to pay benefits, but the time and money thats going into advertising, recruiting, hiring and just letting highly experienced people that want to stay go and doent want anything from them just your job I don't get it how does that balance out. And never having job security I'td very stressing,do now I have to get ready to start looking for a job, get all my skills up to date,CVS, cover letters, applying, interviews and on and on,Im getting yo old for this. It judt not fair😭😰
Setting boundaries is very important. But always have a reason for those boundaries. I would say after over 25 years that setting boundaries and being able to say no is VERY important.
