Do you know how much other members of your team are making? Today I found out a man hired after me got a 5k bonus when he started although we have almost identical credentials. Obviously could just be the time he was hired but I found it strange. Do you ask?

I always encourage people to talk more openly about salary. It only benefits the company to keep it a taboo topic. I'm still mindful that not everyone is comfortable with it so I'll only ask those I feel comfortable with and let them know that they don't have to answer if they feel uncomfortable. This is how I ended up learning I was being under paid 20k compared to someone who started after me and I spoke with my manager and he had me adjusted (1 year in). I'd say not all managers may be receptive to helping you fix this problem but if they value you equally to your colleagues you should have equal pay.

Overall, I encourage you to talk about salary and ask where appropriate!

I don't ask. It's still fairly discouraged where I work even though everyone knows thats illegal. You can still get in trouble for talking about it at work, or at least it'll be noted that you were asking around.

I don't ask. Actually, I think it's against the rules to do so, at least in my company. It's definitely frustrating, but I'm always seeing on here that you have to job hop if you ever want to get anywhere status and pay-wise. Apparently your colleague figured that out with his $5k sign on bonus.

I actually learned today that (in US) companies cannot legally prohibit salary conversations.

They may have just negotiated and got that number. Now having said that, always advocate for your salary. A friend does this every year and for the last 2 years she has had ad hoc conversations using inflation as her rational

I ask after people give their notice to leave — feels less awkward that way. Also, your co-worker probably asked for a sign-on bonus. Did you? We leave a lot on the table when we don’t ask.

We're not allowed to ask. The only way you can know how much someone is making is if they slip up and tell you or you get their check my mistake

Hi, weird question for this forum, so I apologize. I’m trying to be creative here and use the tv stand that I have. The issue is that it has an open back so you can see all my tv wires. I can’t hide the wires because my building won’t let me open the wall. My idea was to slip a tile sheet that is wall behind the tv stand as a back, but I need the tile cut to the specific heigh and width of the tv stand. Does anyone know where I can take this tile sheet to get cut to the specific measurements?
