Firms like it when their associates buy houses, get married and have kids. Golden handcuffs.

P1, as unfortunate as that is, probably true. This was said to me numerous times by male partners (and I’m a male).
And people wonder why the birth rate’s falling off a cliff.
I prefer not having to cover for someone for 5 months, especially when those people often don't come back to the firm.
It's harder in a specialist group with about 10 people across the firm and one of 5 associates. Your work load dramatically increases and the firm can't hire anyone new for the 5 months while they're out even if they don't end up rejoining the firm.
Obviously, I think the firm and your group would prefer you to be past the "parental leave" phase of your life. But I'm sure Big Law also loves the workaholics who are happy to spend their Big Law salary on nannies or au pairs so mommy or daddy can continue grinding for partner...

The latter. Once you have kids you generally find less meaning in toiling away forever and are more likely to go in house
Id assume all good if people leave in-house because those are future clients.
I can say from personal experience that I fit the former mold. I think my firm hired me though not because I was a parent (or had less risk of taking parental leave) but just because I was older and had non legal work experience.
I don’t know if they necessarily cared that I left though. I mean, I left anyway, and not because I needed more time to be a parent necessarily, I just didn’t really want to be a partner. I asked to go in house after 5 years and they found me a good gig.
Yeah I think so. Means you’re in deep and no margin for risk
