Do you think it looks bad that I leave for lunch every day (except for obvious days where the work is nonstop)? I’m in office five days a week and I just need to get outside. My work gets done, but I’m still worried …

Oh my. This question shocks me

like

I literally do for a mile and a half walk at lunch time when I’m in the office. Today at lunch while WFH I took a 5 minute walk to my local pool, jumped in twice, and then walked home. Take your lunch.

like

When I was a big law associate I always left the office at random times to get coffee, etc. no one ever said anything. And it didn’t stop my moving up the ladder. Of course there are times when you just can’t.

like

You’re gonna have to pry my little walk to get a non-cafeteria lunch out of my cold dead hands. Tbf, though, I do normally take it back to my desk to eat, mostly because I don’t like eating at the fast casual places where I get my lunch (too crowded) and because that occasionally helps me leave a bit earlier.

I have stopped going to the gym during lunch, though, when I got some casual comments about it from seniors (and the partner who saw me getting out of my office in my gym clothes didn’t seem happy either).

C1 - For serious. Only excuse for that is you are literally playing hooky from a scheduled meeting.

I’m a partner at a big law firm.

I’ve never once questioned or thought about if, when and where one of my associates or any other lawyer goes, or spends their lunch break, where they eat lunch, etc.

I understand how associates care about perception, but I care about 3 thing (and in this order) :

1. Timely work product ; 2: good work; 3. Recording billable work.

like

You need to separate from work in order to stay productive. If they don’t understand that, you need to work for someone else.

like

Take the mental break. It’s a mini-recharge for the afternoon sessions.

like

The fact that you would even think about this is a massive red flag for your firm.

like

I usually meal prep the night before with chicken breast or ground beef/rice/salad/fruit/yogurt. Or order pickup ahead of time. Either way when I’m done eating (quickly) I take a ten minute walk. Walking after your meals is great for digestion, slightly decompressing your spine, boosting your metabolism, and lowering your blood sugar levels. Obviously meal prepping would give you enough time to walk and possibly leave earlier by ten to thirty minutes.

like

Well you’re taking the word out of its modern context and applying its original meaning. Obviously I’m not intending to stereotype African-Americans. A reasonable people in 2025 would understand it to mean carb overload and not some connotation relating to slavery or black culture.

Please, for your own sanity, figure out why you’re even asking/concerned about something like this. Is it because you’re just an anxious overthinker, or have you been made to feel like it’s a “bad look” to leave for lunch every day?

like

The advice the judge who swore me in gave me was to always take a lunch and take time for myself during the day. The work will always be there.

like

In order to maintain your sanity, you have to take that break!!!

like

I want to say that this has NOTHING to do with the firm. I just overthink lol. Or I’ll see people consistently eating lunch at their desks and it feels like I’m the only one who’s leaving. I’m probably one of the younger attorneys by a long shot, and idk if people are just too lazy to leave for lunch or what, but I just wanted to open the discussion

like

Attorney I worked for would always take a break for lunch, if nothing more than to sit upstairs in the break room and scroll through his phone.

like

This career is hard enough without worrying if you “look bad” for meeting a basic human need. Enjoy your lunches, it’s probably doing wonders for your mental health!

like

I go home for lunch every day and I don’t feel bad about it. Your career is not your life or identity. Any firm that makes you feel that way is toxic. It’s just a job. Everything outside of that is really what matters. That’s my opinion, anyway.

like

You make your quotas? Theres your answer (opposite). And I’m not saying whether that’s right. Strictly how your firm might view it

Take your lunch! Work will still be there …. always without fail! Lol

No absolutely not. Don’t give it a second thought.

I go into the office 0 days per week
