No. Crazy people everywhere. Crime everywhere.
Nope. Cali is so out of touch with the rest of America.
Can’t you just have a funny Tropic Thunder reference without YOU PEOPLE having an MI?
I'd rather not live somewhere where there are used needles and human shit piled up everywhere.
Or maybe EY2 needs to see some place that doesn't have human waste and used drug needles in the streets?
No, I lived there for almost 4 years. It’s losing any semblance of an identity and just being overcrowded by people that aren’t from there and seemingly don’t care about the city. (Guilty, i guess, but i did do local volunteer work, so I wasn’t a total shitbag). Niceness is often fake and people flake all the time. Perhaps it’s a reflection on me (I am from NY), but I’ve lived a lot of places and in a lot of different cultures and I struggled the most with SF. Did make a few solid gems as friends through school/work (3 of 4 of which were originally from the Bay Area) so it’s not everyone of course, just saying it’s hard.
SF is an amazing place to live... I wouldn’t live in the core downtown areas because the homeless problem is real (and worsening), there and generally. But the city has so many things going for it — compact, tons of green space and amazing parks / playgrounds for kids all over the city, proliferation of fantastic restaurants (at all price points), access to beautiful nature and outdoor activities in every direction, very temperate climate, pretty decent range of “big city” cultural opportunities, diverse population, laid back and progressive / live and let live attitudes, and great job opportunities.
Sure, there are problems - politicians who can be a little crazy, inability to effectively address homelessness and NIMBYism, and the impact of COL on diversity over time. But all big cities have their issues.
We live in a quieter part of the city, with kids in public schools, and a wonderful community of families, sports teams, neighbors etc. I can see how someone who moved here as a transplant and just spent two years living in the tendernob working 70 hrs / week might say it’s a shithole... but if you’re seriously considering moving here I’d suggest you seek out more diverse perspectives. There’s a reason every house in the city costs a fortune, and it’s because so many people enjoy being here / want to come here.
Thanks
No. Since tech has taken over culture has taken a huge dive imo. There are people from all over there so it seems diverse but everyone kind of dresses the same, food scene is very overrated and people overall think the world revolves around tech companies. If you're in tech and obsessed with it that's probably appealing to you, but I'm not. Also lived in LA and NYC and much prefer both. That said you have to go and find out for yourself. I knew plenty who love it there.
I lived in the peninsula so maybe that increased the tech vibe for me. Had a lot of friends in the city and definitely spent time in all parts of the city. Maybe I'd need to live there longer but really lived up to the bad stereotypes after I really wanted to love it when I moved
No
The place is a dump
Had a homeless dude shit in the middle of the sidewalk in front of me at 10:30am in SF...
Night of the Living Homeless sums up SF for me.
That summed up Houston for me

OP - as you can see, you’re hearing from (1) people who live here and love it, (2) people who lived here and don’t love it based have thoughtful critiques about the changing culture, (3) people who’ve briefly visited and seen some of the challenges we have downtown, and then (4) people who are strangely obsessed with trying to answer your question based on google and sharing the few most sensational local articles that make national news (esp Fox).
Will let you decide which sources are most credible and helpful :)
Love it. I never see anyone take a dump or run into homeless because I don't go to touristy areas. I love this city - the amazing parks, great people, great restaurants list goes on. I'm just grateful to be here and yes it's expensive but so is new York?
For everyone saying don’t go to the tenderloin or it’s just one neighborhood - goes to show how you have chosen to adapt to the situation. The tenderloin sits at the heart of the city. It’s right next to City Hall. A lot of public transit goes through there. You have to go through the tenderloin if you’re going north- south in the Eastern side of the city.
Furthermore, it’s not JUST the tenderloin. It’s also large sections of SOMA. It’s half the mission. It’s many blocks in Hayes. It’s NoPa.
These are all areas where I cannot live or walk alone as a single woman. That’s sad commentary on the city and it’s leadership.
Keep in mind SF is only 7 x 7 miles wide.
When you start excluding one neighborhood here and half of another there as unlivable and un walkable... well the city gets small pretty quickly.
I say all this as someone who loves the city and wants to see it do better. It’s a fantastic place to live given the access to nature and the economy. I think that is exactly why the city leadership is so corrupt and doesn’t need to actually do anything or fix anything.
"If the cost isn't high" ?? It's one of the most expensive cities in the country. The cost IS high!
Also, homeless people defecating in the streets, power outages and wild fires.
But hey, you do you.
And tons of crime— so much theft.
If People who don’t like it leave, it will be a great balance!
I live in LA and, after traveling to SF, wouldn’t dream of moving there. Save your money and live in LA or San Diego - your money goes so much further and the weather is better here.
View from Ocean Beach condo. I deal with the shit and needles by watching my step. Also doesn’t hurt to be here if you want to be close to technical talent and capital.
Damn. You throwing any Friendsgiving parties soon? I’ll bring food and adult beverages.
Hahahahaha
I grew up nearby and lived there 15 years ago, and loved it. That said, a lot of the reasons I loved it are not quite there anymore, definitely in terms of the city and probably a bit in terms of me.
I loved the music scene and all of the great small clubs. I loved the creative scene and the alternative culture. I also enjoyed the laid-back vibe, no one was dressing up to go to restaurants and it was generally a low judgment kind of place where being different was celebrated.
Now, a lot of the clubs are gone and friends who were artists have left the city because it got too expensive. I will admit it's been a while since I've been going out like I used to, so even if the clubs were there it may not have the same attraction to me. It feels like a lot of the transplants have brought in a culture of judgment and elitism that I don't find appealing.
Yes, head to/live near golden gate park for the best part of the city. The fog coming up in the mornings is out of this world cool
