Travel is exciting but it can actually be draining. Pack light and make sure you bring all your work stuff, even an extra charger in case the one you have fails. I try to block time after traveling to just de-compress.
the time block is such a good tip. Even just to catch up a bit before being thrown back into things.
Sadly, I only get to travel once or twice a year for work. I always wanted a job where I got to travel more. I know people who do travel for work don’t always like it, but I think I would really enjoy the opportunity to travel while getting paid for it.
I think it can be a lot of fun in an earlier stage of life. I wouldn't want to do it all the time when I was married and had a family.
I used to travel for work. I got tired of it after a while but make sure you bring comfy clothes to relax in after work. I don’t like hotel sheets because I worked in a hotel before so bring your own sheets if you care to do that. Get some slippers to walk around your hotel room in and I also like to spray the bathroom shower with bubble scrub.
I used to travel a decent amount in my previous role and here are a few things that helped me:
Have duplicates of your favorite items rtg for your next trip. This means: your liquids bad with travel sizes of your sharp and conditioner and anything else that you will want to take with you (some people are ok with using hotel soap and not having face wash for a few days, I’m not). All of those essentials just keep them in your suitcase or travel bag ready to go. You will also want to have spare chargers as someone mentioned, I like having a battery pack for my phone and a travel charger already in my bag.
Depending on your industry, having things that can double as comfy and acceptable at work is great - I have a few wraps I really like that are great for the plane and also look nice dressed up. Plan each days outfits and see how many things you can double up (essentially, capsule wardrobe approach).
Ask your company to cover the fees for Clear or TSA pre-check. I also charge vaccines a few times when appropriate (a co-worker got the Zika vaccine, for example, when we went to Brazil). I also charged for one load of laundry when it was a longer trip so I didn’t have to overpack.
Download the apps you’ll use - the airline, local app for taxis or Lyft if uber isn’t prevalent, etc. and download enough tv or movies on your device so you can watch what you want on the plane. Bring a comfortable pair of shoes.
Most important - get a suitcase that can expand and always leave with it in the smaller option so there’s room to bring back anything you pick up.
I just get the best hard shell suitcase I can at TJ Maxx or homegoods. They get tossed around so much I don’t think it’s worth buying anything nice unless you can find it on discount. Hard shell because bed bugs can get into soft materials. You want something with four wheels.
If you decide to take the flight right after the conference or meeting—Do. Not. Forget. To. Remove. Your. Spanx. Before. The. Flight.
Most uncomfortable 5 hours of my life!
Oh gosh...
Just started traveling more too and it’s a learning curve. I found keeping airport outfits comfy but sharp helps. Travel often feels like a rhythm. Sleep, hydrate, pause when needed. What are you most excited (or nervous) about?
I think just balancing it all. I'm excited to see some new places when I travel but am just concerned about life/friends continuing on at home without me.
