Only likely promotion is from counsel to senior counsel. Anything beyond that depends on your manager leaving or retiring. Legal depts dont have budget to promote everyone to VP+ so you either stick around or switch companies if that is important for you. I have turned down higher level jobs elsewhere and almkst 100k more in comp because I am comfortable in current role, make around 450 TC and am basically remote outside a few days a month.
Even if a manager leaves or retires, I've never seen someone internally promoted. Have you?
Agreed with SC1. I’ve seen people get promoted, but it’s always a very “right place, right time” scenario. (Ex. My AGC got her role when her predecessor retired; she had been in a “Counsel” role for 7-10 years prior to getting promoted. She’s quite young, and unlikely to leave anytime soon, so if want an AGC role I’ll have to go elsewhere.)
I don’t know about pubcos, but a good friend was hired as National Compliance Manager (non-legal role, though she’s an attorney and legal knowledge extremely helpful), company size 10k+, private equity owned. She worked closely with their new GC. Couple of years, promoted to AGC. Couple more years, her GC left (C-suite shake-up), and my friend got GC. Been there 2+ years now. No idea how her comp has changed as that’s none of my business, though I suspect a decent jump at GC level.
