Accenture Hello, this past December I applied to a Devops role at Accenture. I didn’t get the position but I looked on their website and noticed they have an software engineer apprenticeship. I emailed the recruiter about the apprenticeship but she didn’t get back to be. But after telling me I didn’t get the position she did say to wait six months to apply for another position. I really think I would be a good fit for the apprenticeship. What can anyone recommend? Can I possibly get a referral.

Honestly, I would probably push back on that. Time off is time off. If they want to only take some of my PTO because they expect me to be available, I might acquiesce to that. But taking my earned paid time off and not letting me actually take the time off?

Yeah, I’m with you on that. If you’re expected to be available, then it’s not really PTO anymore, and that should be acknowledged.

I almost feel like that comes with leadership… I check my email, but I only respond to a few people… my Market Executive, one of my assistants or junior advisor… but they also know I check it 3 times a day… once in the early morning, once mid-day, once at night… so the delay is expected…
It only takes a few minutes… just set the boundary… and make it clear that you’ll check, you’ll respond, but don’t expect anything immediate and if it’s mission critical to defer to your designated person…

That actually makes a lot of sense. I like the idea of being clear about how and when you’ll check, instead of feeling like you have to be constantly on. Setting expectations upfront sounds like a much healthier middle ground than pretending to fully unplug while secretly checking all day.
Something like that could depend on one's role, and also on the circumstances of whatever is happening at the time. Generally speaking, it's best to completely disengage, and to resist always being on call. However, if you want to stay in everyone's good graces, and there's something critical in the works, you may need to make allowances at times.

That’s a fair point but finding that balance between protecting your time and staying in good standing is tricky.

Oh definitely. I'm off today but I've had to resist the urge to crack open the laptop three times already.

It’s amazing how strong the pull is to check in “just for a minute” which then turns into hours lol.

If I was told to stay active on PTO, I’d start looking for new jobs immediately. My time off is sacred. I dedicate such a large portion of my life to my job, they can afford to give me time off here and there.

I totally get where you’re coming from. When staying active is part of the expectation, the line between PTO and work gets pretty blurred. I really hope this is a one-time only request.
