I applied to both of my judges on paper. You won’t necessarily know if they are hiring or for what term, but it can still work out. I was hired for my appellate clerkship about a month after I started my district court clerkship, so there is still time (especially for newly appointed judges).
Before you applied to the circuit clerkships, did you remember to check the box on OSCAR that says you have previous clerkship experience? That will help you make it through at least some judge’s filters.
On another note, are you allowing for a lot of geographical flexibility? I got my appellate clerkship through OSCAR, probably because of my previous clerkship and the fact that I applied indiscriminate of geography (some appellate chambers are in the absolute sticks).
