Does anyone have experience with the FBI forensic accountant application/hiring process they’d be willing to talk about? Also any staff level work/life in the FBI if you go the job?

After the initial interview, I had a meet and greet with an agent in one of the cities I'm interested in. He said it wasn't an interview, but I'm pretty sure it was, because the next step was supposed to be a second interview, but I got a conditional offer instead. Don't reject the offer if it is a lot less than you're earning, because there are things they can do to improve the package. Next you will get a link to submit information for your background investigation. Then they will schedule your security interview and polygraph.

AA, it depends on your experience, but for ex, if your CO is GS12 step 1, they can move you to a higher step, but not a higher grade,
and they can offer more comp time. Also, if you look at the salary by locality, it is higher than the standard salary tables.

like

So work life balance is a huge difference from Big 4. Very rarely work more than 40 hours/week for forensic accountants and 50 hours (agent). If you do typically there is comp time and also OT (although rare). It’s really what you make of it. Also, what office/supervisor can really make a difference for FOA. Some people have fabulous bosses, others have micromanagers and the FOA supervisors rarely changeover. Also, when negotiating your pay, get a match on time off—most new hires come in with 6 hrs/pp and you can also request a signing bonus. I know some people got a 25% or 25k bonus (but again depends on the supervisor and office.) Some issues in the FOA program right now is promotions (very limited 13 openings), training (not CPE—more direct position training and they’re working on this), and TDY opportunities—which they also claim they are working on. One thing to note if you’re on the fence between FOA and Agent, you can make the change after a year and you’re able to go agent as a bureau employee up to age 40.

I am also interested in eventually applying to the FBI as either a special agent or forensic accountant. This thread has been incredibly insightful! Just to confirm, do forensic accountants have a 40 or 50 hour work week, and do they have to work odd hours/holidays like special agents?

likeuplifting

Forensic accountants have a 40 hour week. Agents have 40 hours plus 10 law enforcement availability hours for a total of 50 hours. Most of the agents I know rarely work odd hours—it just depends on the case etc. If the agents work nights/weekends/holidays then they generally take a different day off that week or qualify for overtime (agents don’t generally get comp time). For Forensic accountants—it’s very rare to work crazy hours, but you can volunteer for things in the office that would lead to nights/weekends/holidays and then get comp or overtime. As an FOA it’s what you make of it.

Oh, I do!! I am fully prepared this time around haha

Be prepared for situational questions. Don’t freak when you get no feedback on your responses. Like talking to robots. Work life balance depends on what’s going on like if going to trial.

like

What kinds of situational questions? Could you give an example?

I’ve only had “behavioral” questions in interviews for public: tell me about a time where you lead a difficult project, tell about a time you helped resolve a conflict, etc etc

Be prepared to give examples of work you've done that are applicable. I can't remember what the questions were, but I used examples of how I approached cases I've worked on. If you don't have forensic experience, think in terms of analyzing transactions using data analysis tools in excel, verifying against bank statements, comparing to contracts or other documents, that sort of thing. Also be prepared to say why you want to work for the FBI.

like

VP, that's correct.

Following!

I am a staff currently and also am very interested in this position as my exit position from Big4. Is there a specific posting you need to apply to for the analyst role that may not say "forensic accountant"? I have been stalking the fbijobs.gov site for months and haven't seen any roles for that open up.

If you see a posting on LinkedIn it’s also a hiring. HR can pull from both LinkedIn resume drops and FBIjobs. Also, if you know people who work in the offices email or connect with them on LinkedIn because they can put you in directly to their supervisor.
