Again, your question demonstrates confirmation bias. If you self select for certain traits or lack there of, your results yield self confirming data. There are plenty of supporters who display empathy and healthy citizenry attributes.
Fair question.
Firstly, how do you know he doesn’t have decent, human traits? Have you met him personally? Are you a psychiatrist and qualified to assess his mental capacity? Are you an ethicist capable of discerning his moral capacity? How much of his persona is shaped by the media and how much is factual?
^Incorrect application of cognitive dissonance . “sweet" character is an function of being. Supporting Trump is an action. The two are not correlated or causal and can be mutually congruent.
One can argue that OP is experiencing cognitive dissonance because he/she can’t accept that a sweet person could be aligned with Trump. therefore to relieve the discomfort caused by this conflicting evidence, he/she reinterprets it to conclude that the “sweet Trump “ supporter is experiencing cognitive dissonance. Classic case of projection. Funny how that works.
I am not taking about Trump voters. Or early supporters. I am talking about those who support him today after 1 year instead of asking him to step down and Pence become president. Those that choose to keep him in office today when they have the choice to ask for his resignation. They seem to have serious issues including low character and no value for Honor, etc.
Seems harsh and unfounded. Hardcore Trump supporters almost certainly have a fundamentally different view of America and the world than I do, and many of them may in fact be racist to some extent (even if subconsciously) - but saying they all have a “mental illness” is beyond silly.
Only someone with bad motivations or a complete lack of risk analysis capability would focus on illegals when speeders still exist. So his actions show his bad character.
Sorry. I will answer directly. Both. Words matter in a president. They cause actions by others. Sometimes unintentionally.
I will not revise my post again, but I withdraw my comment about mental illness. Good arguments were made. I still stick to low character and selfishness, but I am inappropriately conflating racism and bigotry and these characteristic with illness. I am absolutely certain Trump is mentally ill. But his supporters may just be not good people at a higher percentage than the general population. Not mentally ill
Have you heard “liberalism is a mental disorder”? I am not going to withdraw that.
K1 I have heard people say that. It seems unsupported. And I am a very staunch conservative. So don't make assumptions.
I don't know anyone that really SUPPORTS Trump, but I know a ton of people that like some of the things he's getting done (taxes, especially) and don't particularly care about the way he speaks to or about people.
Vp can you give me an example? And can you square that with supporting someone who does not have those traits? Why would they not want Pence now?
He may say things that are head scratching and hinder progress.... but taxes did get done... if immigration can get done well then he ain’t doing nothing. He’s not one to be the beacon of respect
I should mention on this version of the thread that I am a conservative who is not a neocon and voted for Evan McMullen. A man of honor.
PWC wouldn't you get the same result with pence? With respect included?
And let's remember he had nothing to do with taxes. That would have happened with any Republican president last year. Nothing to do with him.
Also OP, you may be right he played a minor role in taxe legislation. But remember that duty is the purview of congress. One can argue that Trump finally got congress off its ass and back to work.
I met him almost 20 years ago but that would be insufficient interaction to judge him. I am suggesting his lack of empathy and mental illness by what I see. Let me give you a specific example of both the lack of empathy and mental illness. I first noticed it when he called for the temporary ban on all Muslims followed by the literally insane claim that he had seen muslims celebrating in NJ on TV by the thousands after 911.
More than ever
That is seeing something that doesn't exist. A clear sign of mental illness. And he did not goad Congress to do taxes. They were ready. It was Paul Ryan's raison detre. Any Republican president would have achieved the same result.
