Again, your question demonstrates confirmation bias. If you self select for certain traits or lack there of, your results yield self confirming data. There are plenty of supporters who display empathy and healthy citizenry attributes.
Fair question.
Firstly, how do you know he doesn’t have decent, human traits? Have you met him personally? Are you a psychiatrist and qualified to assess his mental capacity? Are you an ethicist capable of discerning his moral capacity? How much of his persona is shaped by the media and how much is factual?
Yeah, a minor interaction 20 years ago is insufficient and what we see on TV is parsed and slanted by reporting. Trump doesn’t have the best command of words especially when he goes off script. Rookie error and a generally hostile media.
What is more important determinant of character : what a man says or what he does?
Also he has never retracted his claims about Muslims even after he was proven won't and challenged. He said he would get the footage. It doesn't exist. That is when I knew we had a person of low character with mental illness in the running.
It is what he does. And he has displayed these traits in his few actions. Good example is the crackdown on illegals. They are... At best... A minor problem. I would argue a good thing. To show the logic, look at the crime. They didn't do paperwork. It is a paperwork crime. Minor. But worse, compare to another misdemeanor. Speeding. Speeding kills more Americans and causes economic damage.
That doesn’t answer my question. What determines a man’s character or even his fitness to serve: his words or his actions?
Ok, but does inaction always demonstrate low character or lack of fitness? Are there situations where doing so might actually be appropriate ?
S1 would you argue racism is not a sign of mental illness? I agree they are relatively high in bigots (race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.). I view racism as a manifestation of mental illness. No?
Also, actions can inspire action in others but it doesn’t “cause” action. To reason as such would negate the concept of free will and determination
Vp1 no. Inaction can be moral. But unsure how this relates? Are you suggesting that their responding with approval in polls is inaction? I see that approval as action.
No, neither in terms of common vernacular language or clinical definition, racism is not linked to mental illness. There are plenty of mentally ill people who are not racist while some of the most vociferous racists in history have been of perfectly sound mind. Same with mass shootings; as discomforting as it may be, plenty of mass murderers were not mentally ill in a clinical sense.
S1 point taken.
Good question for clarification. I was referring to your post that his failure to retract verbal statements was evidence of low character/immoral.
If you think racism is caused by mental illness we have bigger problems here.
Ahhhh.. It is at least showing a lack of empathy because he didn't recognize the amount of fear and trouble he created for that community by spreading that idea. Ultimately people get hurt and killed when false information is proliferated.
Thanks for the discussion. Back to powerpoint.
Haha voted for mcmuffin. That guy is unhinged and it explains this thread.
My mother is the sweetest person in the world yet she fully supports trump. It constantly blows my mind
P2... That is interesting. How does she not see the cognitive dissonance?
I DO NOT KNOW
BF voted for Trump; he bought into the Hillary is evil and fear that Dems will take away his precious guns. He is not happy with many of Trumps actions and behavior. He still hates Hillary. He crossed party lines and voted for Bernie in the primaries. I crossed party lines and voted for the Ohio governor.
Don't like trump personally at all but I support many of his policies: kicked Isis out of Iraq, corporate tax reform, reduction in regulations, America open for business, non-activist Supreme Court nominee, discouraging illegal immigration and supporting merit based legal immigration. As much as I hate his methods, he is getting these things done. I don't consider myself remotely mentally ill or dishonorable.
