Having the same issues. They’re REALLY proud to push back and set boundaries… but upset when they don’t get promoted every year. They think they’re doing GREAT at their jobs… but they’re really not.
We don’t have overtime because advertising isn’t a 9-5 work job. It’s a… “do the work until the job is done” job.
Right! This is the job they chose.
Gen Xer here. I raised my Gen Z kids to tell you this as payback for all the hell Millennials put me through. Good luck! 😁
This (somewhat cringy) video was made 10 years ago 😉

I can’t answer that. I had a writer bill 44 hours one week and they asked me if they were eligible for overtime. And when I said no, they said “oh ok, well I’ll just stop working when I reach 40 hours then.”
I don’t know, I think that’s just the rub of a salary job. 44 might be a record high for this writer. And I don’t ask for money back when he/she bills 30 hours because it’s a slow week.
Quality comes from quantity and grinding it out. You’re lucky if people really put in the effort and work during the 9-5. It used to be juniors would stay late for the free beers and dinner and car home. Now it’s I gotta walk the dog and go to the gym.
I just wish the big holding companies see that this kind of 'culture' is ultimately hurting the work and the end product. So much mediocre work out there for the amount of meetings and discussions that go into it.
Can't tell you how many times I have encountered this too. The attitude is 'I'm doing the agency a favor by working for them' . They should feel lucky to have me'
It's unfortunate.
Bring people in who have a strong work ethic and care about the work. Young or old. Generations should not come in between creating something good
To me it comes down to work ethic. You want to do a 9-5? Cool - but the spoils only come to those who work hard. You can’t have it both ways.
I think it would be wise to just lay down the law with them. If they don't want to do it, then they can go somewhere else. If they're refusing to work the hours you require, then it seems to me they're refusing to do the job.
I agree to some extent. We’re all looking for better work/life balance and i don’t want to be a dictator but the work needs to get done. Isn’t it like this at every agency?!
The world is full of gen z-ers who don’t have this attitude. Maybe look to hire from outside the US?
Would love that but i’m stuck with the gen zs i have
Not sure, maybe there needs to be clarity on full time is 30-60 hours a week and that’s why it’s salary. You want to get paid those slow weeks you need to be willing to put in extra when needed or this isn’t the right place for you? Treating salary jobs as hourly is part of the problem.
Good point about slow weeks!
