Engagement Manager here. Is being an EM from McKinsey something to be proud of? Or is this a job like any other?

I think it is a valid question. I believe yes and yes. You should be proud, lots of people want the role you have. The firm believes in you enough to trust you to run day to day operations on very costly client work. However, it’s still a job and when you leave someone will replace you. So it’s yes to both.

mck 2 your responses in this thread are wonderful. keep on doing you.

I hate consulting slang, I think mck slang can sometimes come across as even more annoying than normal, and honestly I might hate consulting in general. but everything mck 2 said here is totally spot on and reasonable... C4, sorry, but you are 100% in the wrong

like

I'd be proud to work for McK. I'm a higher level but can't beat the prestige of that firm. I applied in B school but got rejected from final round. All my clients hate you guys but they keep hiring you - your partners have great C level connections who pressure them into it (my clients are director/VP level). We act like we hate you but honestly if I could get a job in that firm I'd be there

That’s not a real question or you’re not actually an EM, right? No EM I’ve ever worked with or met would ask a question like that.

likefunny

Good for you, and I empathize with the existential questioning. Like so many others have said, it’s both. And you probably won’t feel “both” most days, just one way or the other—especially if you keep your critical distance and away from the kool aid. You seem neat :)

OP, if you’re working 90 hours, I’d revise the question. Is working 90 h/week at McKinsey instead of [insert hobby, family, health, social life, or whatever is being sacrificed] something to be proud of?

Only you can answer that for your self, your values, your goals.

For me, 90h isn’t worth it because it took too much from other things I value.
I started putting limits on work and changed who I worked with.

like

My 2c. You should be proud of whatever post you are in... if a person doesn’t take pride in their work, what’s the point of that job/post...

like

Whats ur salary and age we can base how proud you are on that since you need approval🙄

likefunny

Dont forget your net worth

It’s important to look at the value of your work. I think that being an EM at Mck is a huge accomplishment, but pride sours that accomplishment when it makes you conceited and boastful. So I applaud your achievement, and I hope you stay humble and grateful for the blessings in your life

like

Thanks

We have over 2000 EMs so it’s not such a big deal. Keep giving those 90 hours

PL at BCG here. I ask myself the same question. Think doing introspection along your career is key to success. Some days I feel proud, other days I wish I had a different job..
I try hard to ignore what people around me think and focus on what brings me joy, passion and energy. The people I work with are a big part of that. I have also identified a few areas I want to focus on and try to build these skills with a longer term perspective irrespective of whether I will be at BCG or not (vs short term just getting next promo) So I would return the question: do you feel proud or are there jobs out there within your reach that would satisfy you more? Would also recommend doing 1-2 headhunter interviews in your field each year to know what is out there...

Interesting reads. EM here too. Not proud, it’s just a job and we make good money.

the critical responses here are completely missing the point. OP asked a legitimate introspective question. none of us are wanting for opportunities on FB to be critical of consulting mindset... I know because I do it plenty. this isn't one of them. move on

Manager at Kearney here. I’m sure you’ve worked hard to be here. You’ve proven that the firm can count on you. There are thousands who would gladly take your job, but the firm picked you. That’s absolutely something to be proud of as an accomplishment. Just don’t let that in and of itself define you.
