You shouldn’t just change your title if that isn’t your actual current title. You should apply and let them know your are seeking an EP title. As an EP you should be comfortable managing a team of producers and department. So at your current position start asking for more responsibility beyond producing to managing others, helping structure the department, implementing improvements, etc.
Don't make up your title...
Definitely don’t make up your own title. Make it clear to those around you that have a desire to become an EP and want to build that skill set. Even without the promotion you can continue building skills. Taking more of a lead on a brand, mentoring/training juniors, helping with department level initiatives, etc. From there you just have to network. Connect with reps, schmooze at vendor happy hours, reach out to CDs you used to work with etc.
I have been in the business for almost 20 years and have been a head of production and EP level. Now as a freelancer I call myself a producer only. That’s what I do, produce. If you have over 10 years of experience and have been at a senior level then the jobs you can apply for are EP level. Go for those. There aren’t many though.
I had the opportunity to start a small production company with two directors, which I did on the side as an EP. When that ran its course I had that EP Cred on the resume and was able to get a “real” EP position working client side.
No. Better to have that conversation in person (or in a cover letter) rather than getting caught in a lie. You can talk about the fact that you feel you have the experience of an EP and have handled the responsibilities of an EP (if you have) but you just haven't gotten the title yet for whatever company reasons there are. Be honest. It's a small industry and HoPs are likely to ask around about upper level hires.
Earn the title like all senior producers do
Don’t promote yourself let someone else do it
10yrs does not necessarily qualify you for EP role
You quit/get laid off and then you freelance and give yourself a title bump on linkedin like many ACDs that mysteriously turn into CDs as soon as they are out...
