Every time I hear about someone pivoting into tech, policy, or business, I feel a little pang of jealousy. They talk about normal hours, transferable skills, and careers that don’t revolve around billables. Then I think about law school, the debt, the years invested and I freeze. It’s hard to tell whether staying is a choice or just inertia disguised as loyalty. Do you ever seriously consider leaving law altogether, or does the sunk cost keep you anchored here?

I would love to pivot away from law but feel trapped due to student loans. I haven’t found anything yet where the pay would be comparable.

I feel trapped because I think I have no transferable skills. Folks always talk about all the other fields that would love to scoop up/benefit from having a lawyer, but it’s difficult to make it happen in practice (pun intended). I feel like hiring or screening folks for non-lawyer roles when a lawyer applies are actually more suspicious.

I think about pivoting but I don’t feel tied down by the student loans because I could make more doing something else.

How does one deal with an incompetent paralegal? I am gracious to all paralegals because it’s not an easy job either but there is one in particular who is driving me up a wall. It’s literally taking me more time to explain to her how to do basic tasks that I end up doing it myself.
