Does she know that her email etiquette is holding back her promotion? That might inspire some change.
That's sadly not uncommon. I've worked with people who presumably were educated but they could barely write. I've had to read emails multiple times to figure out what they're trying to say. There's not much you can do with people like that, if they don't want to better themselves then it's just hopeless. There are literate people looking for work, give one of them a chance instead.
Right? It’s so frustrating. She is annoyed she hasn’t been promoted yet but I can’t in good faith recommend a promotion when something as simple as sending emails need constant corrections
Email etiquette can be hard. The spelling and grammar should be easy fixes. But what about her emails are rude? Because I've gotten tons of rude emails from people before.
‘Send me your email before so I can review it in a google doc.’ Leave comments so they can physically see and grow. They probably think there’s nothing wrong. I wish say as a junior person in my career I’d never make the same mistake twice intentionally. So bringing it to life might help them crystallize where/how they can improve. Some form of emails is about style and personality so they again may not see their style as room. If you offer more explanation of ‘hey we’re in the client services business don’t say give it by this day. Say x because if y.’ Sometimes it’s easier to grasp when you can understand the rationale. 🤷♀️ Otherwise bare minimum just be really honest and direct, ‘I can’t in good faith promote you if I can’t trust you to accurately send a client facing email. Let’s come up with a plan with things you can improve and how you can improve it then revisit it in X weeks.
For a short term fix, I would recommend a tool like grammarly or ChatGPT to proofread and adjust.
Longer term, I’d tell her she needs to enroll in a business writing course. Not sure if your agency will reimburse learning expenses, but you could probably find something free or nearly there.
