Do you drink at holiday parties? This is the first company I've worked for that does a real holiday party and I'm kind of anxious about letting my guard down around my co-workers like that...

My dad told me the best advice: make sure your hand melts the ice before finishing your drink and you’ll get to know who’s banging who.

likefunny

Depends on the company.

My first job I was super nervous about making a good impression at the party, until I saw my boss smoking a blunt on the dance floor. Can’t really remember the rest.

likefunny

I’d recommend sticking to 1-2 drinks max. Maintain your composure at all times, but it’s ok to drink and take part socially with coworkers.

My last holiday party I found out my boss was banging my co-worker. And he was married. This is my favorite time of the year!

Yes, everybody will be drinking, unless they are non-drinkers. But it’s definitely not a blackout drunk occasion. Adult social drinking.

Get a drink to babysit and slowly sip it but don’t drink drink like it’s a night out with friends

like

Yes, a lot of people drink at holiday parties. Including ones with clients.

They all have their own vibe though and how much you drink should depend on what you’re comfortable with and your personal tolerance.

Some parties will feel like you’re out with good friends - the next day will involve many hangovers and laughter about the night before. I’ve been to a lot of holiday parties that involved multiple rounds of shots.

Some will be pretty chill and you’ll leave sober enough to drive home.

If you’re anxious, just take it slow. No pre-drinks. Drink slowly. Grab non-alcoholic drinks. Make sure you eat.

like

Did coke with CCO once, barfed all over the Beverly Hilton another time. Life is short, have fun, don’t barf. Now I’m brand side and we don’t do holiday parties?!

You probably have your weekends back though. Seems like a solid upgrade

Know your limit. For me it’s also 1-2 drinks max spaced out with food and soda water, as my filter disappears and alcohol is truth serum for me.

like

Depends on the venue, but 1 full glass of water in between each drink. Or just have lime, soda and cranberry so looks like a cocktail. Always interesting to be an observer.

like

Neverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

My best advice is to only order yourself mocktails from the bar - get a soda water with lime or something. You’ll be pulled into rounds of shots & drinking games all night so you’ll drink enough in those. you def don’t need to add additional drinks on top of that if you’re concerned about staying professional/sober enough to learn the company gossip & secrets

like

Yes, but I line my stomach first. The food is rarely as plentiful as it should be at these things, and it’s too easy to drink too much too quickly when I’m hungry and standing. So even if the invitation says heavy appetizers or something, I make sure I’ve eaten dinner before I get there.

Depends on the agency, was at one where everyone had max 3 drinks and was just at one this year where a few people blacked out and it was a bit mad men style.

So I have family situation I've been dealing with and yesterday at a company function outside the office, my supervisor brought it up in front of a bunch of people. First of all highly inappropriate, but also it's nobody's business. She's made comments before outside of work about how her boss is gay, blah blah blah. I'm just at a loss. Should I report it to HR? And if I do, how do I do it without it being known that it came from me??

I feel like gay men especially are constantly discriminated against in the workplace. I have been turned down for a promotion, yet again, in favor of a married heterosexual with kids. This has been the story of my career. Have superior experience - stellar reviews - people fighting to get on to my team because our team is great and I treat everyone well. This is so frustrating. Again and again, it’s a culture of parents helping other parents. No gays in upper level mgmt in our office.

Left PA and started industry remotely. Haven’t been in the office. Met my team one time. Tips are to always be on video for even the smallest of calls. Take a ridiculous amount of notes. In downtime, go through your notes and come up with questions by reperforming old work. Set up recurring question sessions with your team so you know what to do next time. Set up performance meetings even monthly because it’s hard to get a gauge on your performance
