PwC 🐠, I interviewed with the firm about 6 months ago for a Senior Associate position on the forensics team. I wasn’t extended an offer because the position was given to an internal transfer, at least what I was told. I tried reaching out to the recruiter I worked with last time but the email bounced back and wouldn’t be delivered. I was hoping to see / reapply if the group still was looking for seniors.
In your opinion, would it be best to reapply as a cold application?

Op I will show you some tough love here. Also a woman and have chosen to stay in more structured consulting and banking firms because startups are too bro-ey and there is no clear chain of command. If you want to do tech, get into a better, larger organization such as Google, where you get mentorship, structure and direction.
1. File for unemployment
2. Figure out your skill sets. What are you best at?
3. Search for jobs with those skills
4. Apply to jobs and be picky for 1-3 months
5. I hope you have 6 months expenses saved
Depending on city I’d say fortune 1000 firms are your best bet, maybe a product or project manager?
Thanks. I have 5 weeks severance, about 20k in cash, my parents can help if need be. I feel like a failure, but at the same time I don’t think either of us vetted one another nor the opportunity nearly well enough.

C1 I am guessing you are girl, and your boss was a valley bro. Ignore the valley bro. Do not internalize. Go after exactly what you want. 80% of survival in finance, tech, and Fintech is literally not internalizing the valley bros.

A valley bro is an entitled white male who, because he is “doing a startup” , which may very well be failing, thinks he is god’s gift to humanity. Avoid.
The company was too small and didn’t really need me (7 in person people, 12 remote secs). The feedback I got from the CEO was that there was a misalignment of skills and that they didn’t see me growing fast enough. He said I could benefit from a manager.
I was completely blindsided and feel terrible. Even though he said that, my CEO said he’s going to connect me with some venture funds as that’s what I wanted to do before joining. Venture jobs are hard to come by and I’m scared about what skills I actually have, and what is needed out there. When I asked him what he thought of more traditional roles like TMT IB, EQR, consulting, he said I didn’t have the analytical rigor. I think he’s just being snooty since I was already in T2 consulting!
What do I do? I feel terrible, but it really wasn’t a great fit. I didn’t like what we were building as much as I wanted to be part of a rocketship.
They raised from tier one VCs, ceo has a great founder profile, revenues were growing quickyl
Any big 4 will hire you, so not all doom and gloom. Refine your vision, story, skillet and start applying.

Don’t limit yourself to VC. It’s too small a subset. My suggestion is go to a bigger firm.

If you are a woman I encourage you to try banking. Don’t let men bully you out. But you need to be able to do the hours.
What specific “analytical rigor”/skills did they say you were lacking?
He didn’t say anything specific which leads me to believe it was just an excuse. I never did any modeling, frameworking, or anything that required too much excel/process driven results. When I did turn around documents like that, they were always super well thought out. I think he didn’t really like me too much
If you need an EY referral/ DM me
Thank you
This is a bummer, but more tough love / life lesson: chiefs of staff are often first to go because the responsibilities are usually vague. Don’t take it as necessarily a reflection on your skills, I would be wary of any startup that small with a chief of staff role anyway.
Thanks! I’ve been talking to a bunch of folks in venture and they think the same thing. Struggling to think about what’s next tbh
