Lots of ppl do. Lots of ppl don’t. Everybody is different. A lot don’t come back cuz they prefer improved WLB
Because they left for a reason! (Consulting not for them, WLB, great opportunities outside, not successful in consulting ways of working etc)
I would say about 5% come back. And those are usually late realizations that they enjoyed consulting and see themselves successful.
Okay salary for too much work. You can make a lot more in industry and much better WLB. People in consulting have a misconception that they make more money than folks in the industry - that is generally true for entry level industry positions but not true for Senior Manager to VP roles.

This really depends on your location.
Started career in consulting and went to industry when I became Mgr. Could not wait to return. Industry definitely suffers from a "grass is greener" perception. Worked in a handful of companies and the last few as a senior exec. Could not tolerate the politics, bureaucracy, lethargic pace, risk aversion, and worst of all the low calibre colleagues. One company was a top 20 places to work and often mentioned on FB as a cool tech company where many want to exit. All I can say is that Dilbert cartoons felt like they were documenting daily life at the company.
Also to whoever said industry pays better is absolutely wrong. Any large company has 20-30 members of management team who make great money. Beyond that it drops off quickly. A large consulting firm has thousands of partners who make good money. Some make more than others but a typical partner makes more than a typical SVP or EVP. I was an EVP comped at the top of the EVP pay band at my last company and made a LOT less than I do now and I'm middle of the range at my current firm.
Also WLB in industry is better at junior levels but once you are an exec and have P&L or global responsibilities, WLB is non existent. Long days and 7 day weeks are very common. Only thing is generally a bit less travel in industry if you are not doing sales or have global role.
Makes me want to reconsider medical school. At least there you wind down and make more as opposed to wind up and make more
