Accounting/ finance is overall boring and dull as hell (I worked in corporate finance). Tax is, in my opinion, slightly better for a long term career. If you want to do a consulting, you should look into international tax or specialized tax groups. Or alternatively, go with tax technologies. I am getting finance automation consulting calls from recruiters due to my digital skills (thanks PwC). Hope you find something you like.
Your firm should have licensed data prep or analytics or RPA. Play around and see if you like any program. Check their website to see if they offer a free training or academy. I am sure your firm has tax technology related group. You should reach out to them and learn about what they do and how you get into. Good luck.
Lol this is so funny literally one from each firm immediately liked this. Glad I'm not alone and keep them coming
If you work at a PA firm use tax as a springboard to move into the consulting practice. Learn some skills / get some certs that are expected for the role you want to move into. Let your CA know you have an interest in consulting. Its not like there is 0 consulting in PA tax.
Don't wanna do tax consulting but yes I am working on that :)
🙄
I've gotten an offer almost every day, and 50% aren't tax related. There are opps out there still
D2 - I specialize in tax provisions and a few smaller services, I have not done any compliance. So I do think that is maybe why I've gotten a broader offer base, although I still get offers for tax compliance too which I ignore cuz I wouldn't do so hot lol
Why do you hate tax?
I’m good at it and it pays the bills. I was never good at science, so I’d be a shit med student/doctor. And it’s not like I can make a career of drinking wine and making the occasional snarky internet comment.
If you are at EY, you could always try Tax Technology. A lot of clients are now transforming their tax function and there is a lot of scope for tax focused tech. It could be RPA, Data Analytics or even tax focussed ERP transformations.
However, since Tax Technologies are still only starting to evolve, your billable utilization will be low (if that's of highest priority to you).
