Family law paralegals - What are billables that we should be capturing that are ones easily missed? How do you include them in your billing (i.e. What does the client see on their bill)?

I miss Family Law. I would say as long as you have a retainer contract in place, then you should be billing for everything. That said, the one area that I always forgot to adequately bill for were the endless emails.

I think most of our paralegals are missing the in-between type things like quick instructions from attorneys and stuff like that.

You bill for what is value to the client. Sometimes it’s blatantly obvious and others you have to pick out or determine if there is a value to them. Imagine you’re the client. If you would question what your billing or task was so will they. The goal is to provide value to the client and do so without making them wonder wth you’re doing and why is it costing so much.

You should be billing for everything that you do on a matter. It is the attorney’s responsibility to determine if it should be on the bill or if they want to write it off. Your job is to document it all. By doing this, you are also showing how much time is actually spent on a matter. Also, write your time entries out in sentence form.

Any form of communication in the clients case, well as that goes, anything. If you and the attorney are discussing a clients case, bill it. If the client has someone call for them (even if you have to tell them you cannot talk to them because they are not party to the case and you have to have written permission from the client) bill the client because they should know better (had that happen). What the client sees on their bill in short is how you define it. Nothing in a client's case should ever be hide from them. They should know exactly what is going on in their case and for what they are being billed for.

Currently a paralegal at a small start up financial services company been there for just a little over a year. I wear “multiple hats” but more recently I’ve done a lot of PM work and some BA work. My position title is changing soon but I’m wondering how helpful that would be for wanting to go into PM work at a tech company. Anyone have any career pivot advice? (Also I’m only 1.5yrs old in my career so I’m definitely still new, and I have previous experience as a project assistant).

Hi all, anyone familiar with Skadden in DC? Looking for any insight!

My boss (atty) is so disorganized! I’ve been with him 6 months and he’s having a hard time delegating, sharing info and managing deadlines. I’ve organized the caseload to manage the deadlines. He says he wants me to help with discovery but when I offer to start on one, he says he needs to do it. (Since he might have to present as evidence) When I give him deadlines and ask for the docs he says he’ll get to it. It’s a small 1 man firm, and I’m the first assistant besides his wife. Any advice?

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.

For those of you who made the switch to in house/corporate law, what was your experience like? Did you have to take a lower position to gain the experience or were you able to argue that your soft skills were transferable to in house? I’ve been in litigation for 15 years and I’m looking to make the switch. Ultimately, I’d like to get into Legal Ops, but feel getting some in house experience first would be beneficial.

(1/2) I started a new job less than a month ago at a large firm with a significant pay increase. I work remotely- which is a special arrangement. They paid for my travel to their headquarters for in-person training. After interacting with my manager and some of the attorneys, I feel like I made a mistake. Manager is demeaning and rude. A bunch of the attorneys dropped not so subtle hints that people who work from home are causing all kinds of problems. I don’t know what to do.
