Your break in employment is not very long—normally, I would say breaks are a primary reason for difficulty re-entering.
It may also be the recruiter you’re using. Not all recruiters have great connections.
I would network heavily now that you’re in NYC, and apply without the recruiter and also locate a well-connected one to perhaps re-apply after the six month recruiter waiting period is over (confirm the waiting period with your recruiter).
Please don’t get discouraged. It only takes one firm to say “yes” to get you back into full time employment, and there are hundreds in NYc.
The fact that you’re getting interviews and being put forward to the “almost” point is a great sign that your resume and background are strong.
When I go through job frustrations, I know it comes across in interviews. So perhaps practice with your recruiter or friends to see if there’s anything about your nonverbal or verbal cues that may be coming across as negative.
Have short scripts — the so-called elevator pitches — to explain your break and why you’re now in NYC, and steer the conversation quickly to how you are a great candidate to meet their needs.
Obviously the best approach now is to apply directly since firms won't want to pay recruiter fee for someone in my situation, but I applied to probably 40-50 firms through recruiters. How long should I wait before trying again? Yes, I did get referrals for all the firms where I had a connection but had minimal luck. I'm not T14 but honestly a little shocked. You'd think 4 years at a big law firm would mean something. 🙄
Would love to know how you got hourly work or what firms are open to it! Thanks
OP checking in- any luck? I’m going through something similar right now
Getting there! I have two in-house opportunities that popped up recently that I'm interviewing for, the processes seem to be moving fairly quickly. Hoping to secure an offer. Pretty quiet on the firm front. I'll update this thread if I get anything - thanks for checking in!
