Yes. But if you're qualified and competitive to get a clerkship....why are you in ID?
An Article III clerkship would open many doors. A magistrate clerkship, a state supreme court clerkship, a bankruptcy clerkship, or a clerkship with the CIT would also be helpful. The bad news is that these jobs are competitive and even extremely competitive when it comes to Article III clerkships.
I was in ID for three years, moved to a big four LE firm for 6+ years, and now at a dream in-house gig. ID is not the end of the world as long as you know how to sell it - when I moved to the LE firm, none of my counterparts had taken or defended a dep, but at that point I’d done dozens. My hiring panel was chomping at the bit for that kinda stuff
Agreed. I was in ID at a regional NY-area firm for 2.5 years and moved to BigLaw 7+ years ago to do corporate/finance. Took a hit in terms of class year (but still a huge pay ri$e), but it was worth it. Even switching practice areas like that, there were ways to spin it, like you said, in terms of practical experience other juniors never get. All it takes is one foot in the door.
Fed clerkship? Def opens doors.
Not all clerkships are created equal, but sure. Not much is worse than being in ID.
