I already have kids, so I can't answer what I would do in this hypothetical. But having been a parent who's worked both remotely and in office, I will say that I'd never do it again if I wasn't able to work the first 3 years remotely. Between the incessant doctor's visits and sick days, that was the only way we were able to make it work and both keep our jobs.

My kids are older but when they were babies I was able to work a flexible schedule that included some remote work and it was so helpful. In today's environment where remote is generally acceptable I would 💯 prioritize remote work if I had kids. No question.
I think the problem is that you can’t really work and care for your kids at the same time. The quality of your work tends to go down when you’re trying to multitask, and that’s just a fact. I have a friend who recently had to return to the office because her company noticed her kids were home during the day and that the quality of her work was being affected.

I think this is true, but it overlooks the option to work flexible hours (when that doesn't interfere with business requirements.) So many daycares have a short day, more like a school day, that would give you a solid 5-6 hours of uninterrupted time. Then it's on you to find those other hours either earlier or later, and managing your work to prioritize collaboration during your synchronous hours.
But even if my kids were in full time day care 8-5 the ability to throw in a load of laundry or put a pot of beans on the stove is priceless!
