Fractional CMOs: Is it a goldmine, or repackaged freelancing?

I see a lot of former Directors updating their LinkedIn to "Fractional CMO." It sounds incredibly lucrative to charge 3 companies $5k/month for high-level strategy. But for those actually doing it—after self-employment taxes, health insurance, and the constant hustle for the next client, does it actually beat a $140k W2 salary?

It’s just freelance.

Agree. Unless you’re only doing strategy and handing it off for execution, then it’s new packaging for good old freelancing.

Is anyone making more as a fractional CMO? How green is the grass?

The math works — but only if you're honest about the full cost. Three clients at $5k is $180k gross, which nets closer to $115–125k after SE taxes, health insurance, and a real accounting for unbillable time spent on biz dev. You're breaking even with a $140k W2 before you factor in retirement matching, PTO, and the psychological tax of constant pipeline anxiety. The people actually winning at fractional CMO either have an inbound reputation that eliminates hustle, or they're billing $8–12k per client on a true strategic scope — not glorified contractor work rebranded with a C-suite title. Director-level experience alone doesn't command the rate; a POV the market will pay for does. What's your current leverage point — network, niche, or neither yet?

I recently had an initial interview for a technical recruiter position. The guy on the phone stated that this is not a 9-5 job and long hours are expected. I proceed to ask how much PTO is offered and he said that is not recommend within the first 6 months of working and the harder you work the more PTO you receive. From that conversation, I saw instant red flags. Any thoughts?

Question about remote job negotiations

I'm currently interviewing for a remote role for a company based in NY.

The thing is I'm based in a different city (southern U.S.)

My question is:

When it comes time to talk compensation, should I base the market rate for the role on my city of residence or NY?

Would it make sense to ask them directly how they determine comp for NY-bases vs. other city-based employees?

Anyone have experience with this?
