Petty theft? What are they going to do after the fact
You absolutely do have recourse, but you do need to follow the appropriate process for your state and county. For most regions, the first step is to go down to your local police department and file a police report. No, the process is not to call 911 or the local police and expect them to come to your property if there is no active threat. But, they will take a report. Take photos and document your evidence. The police report becomes the official report for insurance claims and civil court.
Civil court is your first step for restitution, not criminal court as you assumed with your first call to the police. That’s what they meant by “it’s not their job.” If civil court also finds that there was intent to vandalize and theft, it can trigger a criminal case. Regardless, filing a civil court case (using the police report) is where you start and where you get financial restitution for landlord-tenant issues.
