If the experience is of few months just say you took a break but if it's of long duration better contact that company and ask for the letter. They generally reissue it
Ideally it's better to get the letter from the company as it will secure your future switch. Or if you don't want that you can give fine medical reason/mental health break. But it's always risky as generally these things are discussed during interviews

6 YOE and this worry about a 5 months gap in history??.
I really don't understand why you need to tell lie that you don't have any gap that too just for 5 months.
Yes it will decrease your total YOE by 5 months but believe me, showing 5.5 YOE is better than your worry.

I guess you are still wondering about the appropriate answer for gap,
Why don't you want to believe that there is absolutely no problem if you tell exactly what happened about this. You are the best person who knows why this gap is.
Still here is one answer if it helps-
I joined one very small startup which couldn't survive and got shutdown without giving any letters, so I don't add that in my experience.
Background check only checks what certificate and documents your are claiming or what ever you have mentioned in your Resume.( It doesn't verify what you are not claiming). Above statement is not to write in Resume, that is just for interviews answer.
And if you get the email to explain the gap from background verification team, you can just tell "Unemployed' due to some personal reason. and since you have not mentioned anything in resume, no one can cross question about this.

Request HR for experience certificate...try hard... don't lie....u might get stuck in background check..some orgs do it thoroughly...
