Gerrymandering works both ways.

NY State went for Biden 60% vs 37% for Trump but the new Congressional district map is 22-4 in favor of the Dems.

In MD the vote was 65-32 for Biden in 2020 but the congressional delegation is 8-1.

As a democrat; I’d be all for an objective redrawing of every state map. Probably the single best way to eradicate modern conservatism overnight

Anti gerrymandering legislation is possible. Republicans are dead set against it, you can see this by the statements made by the respective parties.

The reason is simple, as a whole the country is far more democratic leaning than republican leaning and republicans are desperate to stay competitive.

The new NY map is a result of being tired of gerrymandering.

Of course. We’re stuck in a “but they started it so I have to do it to compete” loop that has no resolution without a bigger outside force.

Which we don’t want, because that would be the US Senate and SCOTUS, who would decide that the country should be run by the GOP in perpetuity, for reasons.

Democrats would happily eliminate gerrymandering for everyone if given the opportunity. And the voting reform proposed by dems, I think, does that. But this is how the game is played and dems have to respond in kind. Important to note that GOP is far more pervasive with it and gains a far greater advantage through it.

This is like last week’s post complaining about Soros donating millions to blue campaigns and orgs. People whining that it’s wrong and just because the GOP does it doesn’t mean dems should. But again, this is how the game is being played and the dems can’t not respond in kind. Dems are against Citizens United just like they’re opposed to partisan gerrymandering (and GOP gains a bigger advantage through Citizens United), but here we are.

OP is not a serious person/thinker. Dems ask Rs to stop this and Rs say no. So Dems then participate in the system Rs advocate. Sorry for adhering to your rule OP, I guess?!?!?

When I look at the congressional delegations versus the presidential results it seems like the Dems have 24 seats from gerrymandering while the GOP might have 18-21 more seats. CA is the worst state with 8 extra Dem seats. MA, NJ, OH, and TX seem to have about three extra seats for their party in control.

This is a fairly simple analysis, but it does seem like both sides do it. Claiming otherwise is just denying reality.

Now if we can finally get republicans on board with making gerrymandering illegal, that would be great

The tribalism in the thread is amazing. It’s obvious so many are unwilling to consider their team isn’t perfect. Or worse, they think their motives are so pure that their methods are beyond questioning.

The left is only a decade or two behind the right in enabling dangerous people to obtain power. Clinton’s predatory behavior was excused in the 1990’s. It’s only a matter of time before your tribalism brings a progressive authoritarian to power.

There is a fantastic series on gerrymandering on the 538 podcast I highly recommend - it looks at different types of gerrymandering (packing, cracking), as well as assesses different approaches to determining political districts to assess which efforts lead to the most truly representative districts that best match the make-up of the given geography. Totally worth the time of anyone who’s into politics at all.

OP (and all) - this is a helpful article. While both sides play, it’s hardly equal. For example “Democrats won in nine of the 10 most-gerrymandered districts. But eight out of 10 of those districts were drawn by Republicans.”

I don’t understand P1’s reaction. I’ve clearly state drone GOP does this. I haven’t excused either party for gerrymandering. But so many people here refuse to accept the Dems do it too or justify it.

Read a itch Woodrow Wilson and his authoritarianism. He jailed journalists and political enemies, and justified it using the progressive ideals of the day. There’s plenty of examples where a tribe’s unwillingness to critically asses their own shortcomings result in dangerous people coming to power.
