There are no options, that’s why they do it. And they don’t care if a few years down the line the lowballed salary continues to be lower than what it should be, because for many of these jobs they probably think they’ll be able to fully outsource them or replace them completely with AI. So what we’re getting is essentially the final breadcrumbs before dinner is over.
If it makes you feel better, I took over a 25% pay cut and also went from fully remote to hybrid. But I moved out of tech and feel much less stress, lost weight, and feel happier.
The first 6 months sucked but eventually you realize the real metric to keep track is time spent at work vs total pay. Once you receive enough pay to be comfortable, your mental health becomes more important and you start optimizing for the time spent at work.
Yes, I've been seeing this so much too. Salaries are lower, perks are a lot less robust, and true flexibility is out the window. How do we transform this market back into a worker's market where we get to set more of the terms? I really don't like where it's trending right now at all.
Free market capitalism is a b…h. Employers aren’t using the crappy job market as an excuse - they’re looking at the market and figuring out how to get the most talent for their money. The market sets the salary, the majority of regulations favor the employer and allow them to treat you like garbage.

If you need the job, you might as well take it. And keep looking. The thing about these lowball offers is that companies know they can toss them out with impunity. If you don't accept the offer, there will be people behind you who need and job and they'll take it. As long as there is one person who will accept the low offer, that becomes the standard. It's just how markets work.
