Got an offer to move in house from BigLaw but I am very nervous that it’s going to be a grind. The offer package is solid, but it is a young company with a lean legal team that seems to have plenty coming down the pipeline. I’m sure it’s not BigLaw hours, but if I’m regularly going to very dipping into nights and weekends then I’m not sure walking away from BigLaw money is the right move. Any good questions to ask? Part of me wants to bluntly ask about about WLB but not sure if that’s taboo…

Young company and lean team makes me think lot of fire drills, not 9-5 and wearing lots of hats. Pass

Agree that you will be wearing a lot of hats and working a lot, but it’s great experience that you will be able to parlay into your next in-house role

I work on a small lean team. Night and weekend work only on occasion. We all have small kids and most of us work hard to get things done during the day. I would see what the makeup is and bluntly ask what night and weekend expectations are. I am very busy during the day but don’t stay on past 5 usually.

Just depends how much they lean on outside counsel. Some companies are cost sensitive and really try to take on way too much of their deals internally which leads to the crappy WLB. But if they’re really leveraging outside counsel on deals as much as they can, even with large deal volume your weekends and nights are often spared

What industry is the company in? Startup?

Would this be a bad time to switch positions for the purposes of career progression and higher compensation? But seems like a risky move in this economic climate?

Interested in moving in-house — any suggestions/tips on networking with other in-house counsel?

Starting a new job next month, and considering taking two days off for kids’ spring break next month. Not sure whether it’s appropriate to request time off for a new job (I would’ve preferred not to take any time off for first three months). I may just be able to just ask for a single Friday off (so 1 day rather than 2 days).

Any thoughts on whether I should proceed with the request? I just came from big law and want to make sure I’m not making a bad impression on my colleagues.
