Question for all the Salesforce employees out there: which should I apply for? A Solutions Engineer position or a Salesforce professional services role focused on delivery? Looking to make the move but would want to know more about how the two compare in regards to total comp, WLB, career progression, exit opportunities, etc.

It feels that way! Networking, referrals, and all the extra things really take away the simplicity of just filling out a paper application. All of my applications are in purgatory, “under review” and “under consideration” has been like that for a couple of months now. Paper airplane would bring me more joy than filling out another one!
I swear, I think a lot of online applications are some misbegotten social science experiment to find out how much inane nonsense people will tolerate. By the time I've filled one out I can't stand myself and I never want to think about me again. But, what can you do, that's part of the kabuki theater of getting a job these days.

In the relevant part of my career, no. Every single position, either the recruiter contacted me, or I had a referal/some connection through prior work.
You could say one position technically was a cold apply, but they were a startup created by founders of the company I was at, and even though I never worked with the founders while they were at that company, they were hiring pretty much anyone from that prior company for the new thing...so kind of like how ex-McKinsey and ex-Harvard hirr their own even without a prior relationship, except I'm not that smart.
Point is, always network, and check in periodically with ex-colleagues doing interesting things.
Before the pandemic, yes. I have accepted two jobs since then and both were through networking. Not even an interview through online applications. There just aren't as many jobs out there now so it's far more important to get referrals.
