Has anyone ever had a company try to enforce a non compete against you? They’re generally unenforceable in my state against attorneys but wondering what people’s experience has been.

Also, would it be viewed as a step up career wise to go from a global CLO role at a company doing ~$750 million/year in revenue to a regional GC role (such as GC for the americas) for a company where that region is doing ~$10 billion/year in revenue? Currently have management responsibilities at the smaller company (exec team, etc) that I wouldn’t have at the much larger company.

I'm not saying money is everything, but it's also not nothing. The primary reason for doing a job is to get paid. So how much you get paid for how much work is a pretty integral piece of the equation.

In most states a lawyer can’t even agree to a non compete for legal services per Rule 5.6 but bizarrely NY Courts will actually enforce them.

If they aren't really a competitor, then (1) they don't have a real economic interest in enforcing the noncompete, and (2) they may ultimately lose in court if you litigated, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be expensive or that their case would be frivolous. The real question is how spiteful is your company? You work for them, so you should have some idea.

I doubt they would enforce this, especially if you leave the company in a good position with a successor in line.

What’s the salary differential? Is there an opportunity to step up further into a global role at the new company?

The base salary I’ve been told so far is similar to my current pay (I’m probably underpaid right now for a CLO) and total is more. I’m sure I can get more when I negotiate. It’s a much larger company although I’m not sure exactly what advancement internally would look like. Advancement would most likely be a move to another company at a more senior position.

Tougher question is whether it’s better to have a more senior title at a small company or a “lower” title at a much larger company where I’ll be dealing with a bigger set of issues. Reality is that I’ll probably have to take a less senior title at any larger company.

I need some career advice. I finished my master's degree in international law (B.A.Sc international relations) but I am not sure where to go from here. I always wanted to join a big firm and I've applied to different vacancies in international firms/companies but got rejected from all of them.
Does anyone have any tips on certain job positions or companies where an LLM would prove to be useful with my background?
I'm starting to feel quite stuck in this situation and it's very demoralising.

Friends, need some feedback on an idea:

I’m thinking of starting a podcast interviewing leaders at startups about their experience with specific challenges - I know, cliche, get a more original hobby, etc.

Not looking for the narrative arc of How I Built This or Masters of Scale. Instead, looking to uncover specific problems faced by companies that tried something new for the first time. What did they not see coming, how did they adapt and measure, etc.

What are your thoughts on this format?

Interviewing for a product designer IC job at Meta, I was told by the recruiters that final panel would be 2 ICs and 1 manager. My schedule has 3 managers, no ICs and no other functions. I asked - told it was just due to scheduling constraints. I think managers just naturally have more experience and more stringent standards (generally). Is this worth asking to set up the more standard panel for me even if it takes longer to schedule? Or is this a non-issue? Just want an equitable experience

What would be a typical salary for a junior in house counsel role (3 yoe) at a publicly traded company in a secondary market (think Austin, Tampa, Charlotte)? I’m having a really hard time finding what a reasonable range would be. Most positions I’m applying to require desired salary in the application, and the truth is I’d accept anything north of 125k but don’t want to undersell myself and take a bigger cut than necessary coming from biglaw.

Considering taking a position with a small-cap in the US trying to build their legal department. The title is standard “counsel” although the work would be with the senior leadership team and reporting to the GC in Europe. How reasonable is it to ask for a bump in title - Senior counsel or Head of Legal, US? If it matters, I am a 6th year and have been told that I will be expected to hire a junior or paralegal as we build up.
