Is “Entertainment Industry” code for OF or modeling? Or do you mean like being a gaffer or best boy?
Alumni commonly move into strategy, operations/production, talent management (A&R), marketing/brand partnerships, or legal/compliance roles.
Success Factors:
• Transferable skills (project management, analysis, client handling).
• Strong networking (alumni, MBA programs, side projects).
• Starting with business-adjacent entertainment roles, then pivoting.
Challenges:
• Pay cuts and slower progression vs. Big Four.
• Credibility gap when moving into creative-heavy roles.
• Risk of plateau in admin/support roles.
Outcomes:
• Positive: High satisfaction in strategy/ops/marketing; some reached VP-level in media.
• Mixed: Creative/artistic roles harder without prior industry ties; some returned to finance.
• Negative: Limited upward mobility for those stuck in non-core roles.
Takeaways:
• Best chance of success comes from entering through business-linked entertainment roles.
• Expect lower short-term ROI (pay, titles) but better passion alignment.
• Strong networks, willingness to take a step back, and educational bridges (e.g., MBA) predict the most successful pivots.
Love this - I actually did the opposite: Left entertainment for finance. Salaries in entertainment can be pretty low. Despite a senior leadership position, my pay was part “cash & fun stories to tell friends.”
Do it - and set 2-3 year goals. If you don’t hit those goals, you can always fall back to the big4.
I did for 4 years and it was so much fun. However pay is not the same. Also creative people in the industry are legit nuts. I ended up coming back and am super thankful for the peace, consistency, and pay.
I left entertainment industry to go to accounting hahahah shit is always on, physical, exhausting, and you work with some real crazy people
