You aren’t going to be able to post an inspirational LinkedIn post if you don’t give him the job
Alright, Bridgette... Calm down.
Many will say it’s outdated, but I’d have a hard time hiring someone who can’t even put the effort in to look professional for an interview. While I agree judging people for how they choose to dress is shallow, there’s a time and place. After you’re hired, maybe a t-shirt is acceptable, but for an interview/first impression? Comes off as low effort and poor judgment imo.
I agree. First impression is “I don’t care” or “I’m too cool for this job”
Granted, if she/he has the chops, then it’s a different matter. But someone can at least grab a polo or collared shirt.
I interviewed a candidate who had green hair and laundry (underwear) hanging in the background. 🤷🏻♂️
I did not recommend extending an offer, but not based on the hair color or the underwear. Having said that, I concluded the same as AM1, it’s too far into this to not prepare your background.
Most of the time I don’t even notice what people are wearing.
Chief
Don't lose a good employee over what they wore at home. If needed, do you think they'd dress up properly? If the answer is yes then move on and dont dwell on what they wore
Button down or bust.
On my last interview i simply had on a basic orange shirt.
Interview went great, went over by an hr.
Got the job offer 45 minutes after interview.
My coworker said that yesterday.
Maybe he didn't know the social norms, but that can easily be fixed. If he's a good fit and can do the work, give him a chance, particularly if it was not for a very senior role.
It’s kind of an “all else equal” go with the professionally dressed candidates
Pro
If everything else about the candidate was good, I feel like it can be overlooked.
Also if you don't hire them, maybe kindly tell them that while this had no bearing on hiring it would be recommendable to wear a more formal shirt for an interview for an accounting job
Yeah, for a non-tech company, I don’t think he knows how to read the room and may not fit in with the biz culture and will not last long. Unless they are super talented (and then why would they be applying with you and not some fancy tech company?) it’s fine to pass.
The “too cool for school” look only works if you have the skills to back it up. Maybe he does. But it might also indicate that he doesn’t care, while other, slightly less qualified candidates do care and really want the job and will put in the extra effort.
Agreed with SA1. It’s not that he’d be a bad employee because he wore a t shirt. It’s that if I were hiring someone, I’d feel that the people that went to the lengths to dress up for the interview want the job more. It’s not a make or break if he was the best candidate, but I think the others are more excited about the opportunity.
How hard is it to toss a polo on at the very least?
That said, I wore an Iron Maiden shirt during a client intro call (not expecting we were going in camera hot) and turns out the guy is a huge metalhead and we hit it off. Of course, when I was asked to show myself I said, "fair warning, had an early start today and I'm still very casual!"
I just went through six interviews for a Big 4, got the job and not one person I interviewed with turned on their video. The world is changing!!
