I went from small group elementary to intermediate kids on a ‘secondary’ schedule. I like it better because EL is a scheduled class period in their schedule, instead of a few mins whenever you can grab them, but it would depend on the service model for your district...
I did the opposite switch, and the biggest difference was the level of engagement. It's more difficult to get students to be engaged in high school. However, what I noticed they liked was real-world application, and seeing how what you are teaching will help them when they graduate. But that was a while ago...
I had a split schedule for several years . SHS in the morning and K-2 in the afternoon . Obviously primary children are more compliant but in the SHS , I feel that I have been able to connect on a deeper level with the kids . Been ESL for 28 years now - 3 years now to go ! - and truly love the connection that I have with the kids on the secondary level . It may be more stressful , but I feel that it is totally worth it .
Thanks for responding. I may have an opportunity to move to High school, so I'm wondering what I might be in for. I have worked with high school kids before in a summer program. I feel that I would be able to connect on a deeper level with older kids and I would like to try working with a group other than elementary.
I love middle and high school. They are independent with daily living skills. I form deeper relationships with them. Their issues are more adult, but they are people just as much as younger students. They are the younger students grown up.
