I believe it's related to something called the 1000 hour rule which is to protect freelancers and permalancers - have you been there long? You're essentially not allowed to work freelance more than 1000 hours in a calendar year otherwise your employer has to treat you like a full time employee ie. Provide benefits. There's no way around it - it's the law but vague so you should definitely do your own research as well instead of relying on HR. Your case could be something else entirely - that was just my experience and it wasn't WPP but I was close to 1000 hours when I got a benefits trigger email. It was actually... Not great as I didn't want to go full time and they weren't willing obviously to give me benefits and meet my freelance rate so I had to literally drop my pencil midway in a project and leave my team hanging which I felt terrible about but it was mismanagement by HR/Resourcing. Unless yours is a different thing where they may provide some light level benefits to freelance which I've also asked about and know they exist but it's usually minimal. Good luck!
How do you get on W2 as a freelancer?
I have never had a freelance gig lasting more than 2 months
I have and I just didn’t take the benefits and kept everything the same
I’ve gone through the same thing with WPP and declined the benefits. It’s a possible trap because they want you to be freelance for a reason and I’m fine letting them know I’m not going to weasel my way into more compensation that way
Depends on what the notice was for. If you work over 30 hours a week for a certain amount of time, you qualify for up to 5 sick days because of the ACA. But, sometimes, you are just on a list for 401k accounts by accident. Unless you are under a union contract, then it can vary. I was at an IPG shop and some freelancers got sick days, but it was extra paperwork with a strict deadline.
I have health insurance through WPP as a freelancer/temporary employee. They give you one choice and it’s pretty minimal. However, for a family, it’s $1200/mo. That’s $800 less than comparable shitty Obamacrap plan, so it’s not a bad deal. And when you leave, you can COBRA it It’s administered by a separate benefits group. So I can see no drawback
Your likely listed as a Part-time employee, not a real freelancer. Be careful of your status and ensure you know what it is.
Thank you everyone. It looks like I was categorized as part time and the more I poked around, the shadier it looked. Gonna stay away for now.
It’s not shady at all. After 3 months they have to offer it to you if you’re a temp employee. I got it through Omnicom when I was freelancing for them and then did COBRA. It’s not the best insurance but it’s a hell of a lot better than what’s currently on the market in NYC. If it’s offered and you need health insurance do it.
