I’ve never considered freelancing before, but this year I got hit with a series of unfortunate events… including leaving my role for an amazing offer that later got retracted. Any tips on where to start?

You just wrote the first sentence of my autobiography! Chin up friend! It will get better. Update your LinkedIn immediately with skills, open to work options etc. One tip I read on here that’s been really helpful is to search freelance gigs by “posts” instead of jobs. Gold mine! Still look for the jobs but there are dozens of posts published throughout the day from different people and industries for freelance gigs. You can comment in their thread or dm them your portfolio and elevator speech.

Figure out what you want to do ,what services you want to provide and begin reaching out to your network. You would be surprised of the weight your personal brand holds. Work on your portfolio if you haven’t already.

First off, F that place that retracted the offer and blew up your life. Seriously. Hate that. But letting that thought die in the gutter for a moment, you just got your start as a freelancer with this post. Save the rare exception, every one of us started by thinking "I guess I'll try freelance?" So you're right on track. Finding gigs is similar to finding full-time, except now you're also looking for (and hitting up) resource managers. Tap your network. Let people know you're freelancing. The first couple gigs are the hardest to get. Then word of mouth takes you pretty far. As long as you're good at what you do. Which as a freelancer, means being the 'yes and' person. Meaning you deliver exactly what they ask for the first time, ready to eat another heaping spoonful with a smile.

Just put in my 2 weeks to do freelance. I lined up enough Billings to make a go of it. It’s scary but the idea of a better life is better than the hell I was in.

Hello, I recently was reached out to by an in-house recruiter at a similar but slightly different company than the one I currently work for. The recruiter provided a base range and an OTE range. The lower end of that range is what I am currently making. The higher end of that range is almost 200k more than my current comp. The role is almost identical. I wasn’t looking to move, but that higher end range would set my family up very nicely for our goals. But I am happy at my current company. Help?

Copywriter with serious imposter syndrome at new job! How do senior writers up their game? Was in-house 1.5 years and underpaid in NYC. With only previous freelance experience (and nonprofit and grant writing before that) figured I had to slog through it for years. Cut to now, 6 months into a new copywriting role at huge tech company. My salary almost quintupled overnight. I think I’m doing great, but that depends on the day and who I work with (no other writers by the way).

Quick question: Do you think is it fine to be asked for preparing an outline for marketing plan as an assessment test so, employer decide if you will be the right fit for position ?

I’m currently working in insurance customer service at an agency. I work in the mortgage department assisting w mortgage changes , payments etc. I’ve been thinking about becoming a claims adjuster most likely for property damage . Is it worth it ??? I hear a lot of talk about how claims adjusting is a lot of work and very demanding but I think my current position has prepared me for the challenge. What are some good companies I maybe should apply for after getting my license?

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

I was laid off, and I am now trying to pick up freelance while also on unemployment. Last week I made roughly double my UE benefits from a freelance job.
